Unfortunately I am not convinced that Microsoft will leave the community in-tact. The EULA's probably going to get worse. And Microsoft loves to actually enforce their EULAs. :(

I read a comment in another thread that sums up my thoughts pretty well:

    "I hope the following happens:

    1. Microsoft rewrites it from the ground up. Minecraft's performance is terrible, I'd love to see that fixed.

    2. They strip down the game to a barebones engine.

    3. They create a library of approved mods (which will include Microsoft's "mods", which will basically be the most up-to-date version from the Mojang team) Whenever you create a world, you can select whatever mods you want to play with.

    4. They implement a consistent and clean modding interface.
I have no reason to expect anything like this to happen. But for some reason my total disillusionment with the Mojang team has translated to uncharacteristic optimism for Microsoft."

That's my hope for a best case scenario. But honestly the best anyone can do right now is make an educated guess, since apparently not even mojang knows what MS plans to do.

Mojang are just limp dicks. I hope Microsoft actually DOES something instead of enforcing crappy EULAs.

That would still be bad for servers like us. Rewrites are bad for our existing code. If they rewrote it in C# or something, that, too, would be bad for cross-platform. Approved mods is a bad thing since it requires people to seek approval rather than just modding.

I hope that Microsoft doesn't take Minecraft in the wrong direction by doing stupid things. Minecraft is fine for me right now, but Microsoft better not screw it up.

Who knows, maybe Minecraft will be less broken... because we all know that Microsoft never breaks anything.

Honestly, I wonder if MS knows what they have gotten themselves into. This could turn out to be a good thing, or a really big mess. I am leaning towards expecting the latter, but we will see...

What is the deal with the new EULA changes? Are they actually going to be reinforced and all of our sethomes and stuff will be taken away? Hopefully not.

I am not really sure they effectively could. Not without a LOT of work. I think, however, the biggest problem will be that they will find a way that servers can only play on their approved mods... in other words, the mods that allow us to play the game how they feel it should be played. Minecraft has a huge modding community, and to a large extent, that modding community is what keeps Minecraft fun... and people playing.

At any rate, I do not see how Legion Servers can be unaffected by this. At the very least, this should prove interesting.

*edit - Ha! I just found this...

They already have our money, so they won't take any risks by doing whatever the fuck they want with the EULA. They probably do understand that minecraft is the sandbox game of sandbox game, because you can mod the game freely and that shit, but all the people who would have a problem with them carrying out a SWAT raid on your house for installing optifine, are people that already bought the game.

If you play minecraft with a mac or Linux (server runs on Linux) you are fucked. They won't take your account away, that would be illegal, but you probably won't be able to launch it on anything other than the newest version of windows. Good way to get major addicts to upgrade or buy the windows OS.

There are also smaller things. If you click a link in chat, do you think they are gonna let you copy/paste that into chrome, or open it with your default browser? HELL NO. They are going to make you open that link in IE every time. If you don't have it installed, they will force you to install it.

How many people these days have MS accounts? What if we could force everyone in MC to sign up for one?! BRILLIANT! (It's Google+ all over again.)

Why have all these rogue servers running, when we can have a small amount of shitty monitored heavy community censored for children servers?! Bye bye legion, guess you're stuck in our approved server with millions of 8 year olds spamming chat. What was the main aspect of your server again? WHAT?! ANARCHY IS IMMORAL! WE DON'T WANT TO HARM YOUNG MINDS BY ENCOURAGING CYBER BULLYING! Guess you don't have a server anymore.

Even if everyone, every single person who plays minecraft decided to boycott, it wouldn't lose MS any money, just give them a temporary bad reputation.

    We are fucked.

I agree with everything except the part about Mac of course. We may not be able to run that fast, BUT GOD FORSAKE THE DAY WE CAN'T OPEN MINECRAFT!

Edit: Looking back on this, this could be interpreted the wrong way. I'm talking about Mac if and only if all of the quoted stuff above actually happens. If it doesn't, who cares.

I don't know what it would actually look like in Javascript, but I can assure you they will find a way to fuck you over.

/// makes sure the game is being run on windows///
When the game starts, it will instantly check which OS it is running on.
If the OS is not the latest version of windows, it will come up with an error message and shut down.

That is all they need to do if they want a good few 100,000 people to buy windows 8.1 just for minecraft. You think they won't do it? You don't fuck around with corporations like MS.
